What if one receipt mixes personal and work purchases?

Published by Talia Helps · Updated

The short answer

Review each item. Separate work purchases from personal items, keep the complete receipt and note the work purpose. Do not record the whole total as a work expense. If one item has both uses or the split is unclear, flag it for review instead of guessing.

Start with the items, not the total

One shopping bag does not mean everything has the same use. Mark each receipt line as work, personal or still unclear. Keep an unmarked copy so you can read the original document.

Include the date and store. If supplies were for two different jobs, add the context you remember today. You do not need a customer’s full name or home address in the file name.

A $90 shopping trip

Illustrative example, with no tax or discounts: you bought $45 of cleaning products for a job, $15 of work gloves and $30 of groceries for home.

  • Identified work portion: $60.
  • Personal portion: $30.
  • Total you should be able to compare with the receipt: $90.

The $60 is an amount separated for review, not a confirmed tax deduction. If the receipt includes shared tax or discounts, keep the details and clarify the allocation; do not make up an amount.

What to say when recording it

I bought $60 of cleaning products and gloves for an office cleaning job. The receipt total is $90; the other $30 was personal.

Check that the record did not treat the full $90 as a work expense. With Talia, review the amount, date and description before confirming. Keep the supporting document separately and connect it to your record.

If you use a product at home and at work, explain that use. Your label does not decide its tax treatment; take the question to your tax professional.

A checklist before you move on

  1. The receipt is complete and readable.
  2. I identified personal items without erasing the original.
  3. The recorded amount matches the portion I intended to record.
  4. I noted the work purpose.
  5. I flagged mixed-use items that need review.

Making separate purchases next time may make the routine easier. It is not a reason to lose the documents from this trip.
